A Midsummer's Night Dream by Isaac Lekwuwa.

" A Midsummer's Night Dream" is a play that surrounds the intricacies of love. After Lysander and Demetrius had been influenced by the potion, they neglect Hermia and begin to love Helena. As at the beginning of the play the author makes the reader believe that Lysander and Hermia were strongly in love against Egeus' (Hermia's father) desires and Demetrius' love for Hermia.I think the effect of the potion made mockery of the strength of their love. This goes to show that some things are stronger than love.
Hermia stayed true to her character through out the play. This makes her contradictory to the point of the play which weighs the intricacies and uncertainties of love. She maintained her love for Lysander even when Theseus gave her the option of obeying her father or 'to die the death'. When Lysander and Demetruis were influenced by the potioned, she was not quick to anger. Helena on the other hand accused her of being a party to mock her. (Lines 190 -201)
Hermia:You speak not as you think., It cannot be
Helena: Lo! she is one of this confederacy
Now I perceive, they have conjoin'd all three
To fashion this false sport, in spite of me
Injurious Hermia, most ungrateful maid!
Have you conspir'd, have you with these contriv'd
To bait me with this foul of derision?
Is all the counsel that we two have shar'd,
The sisters' vows, the hours that we have spent,
When we chid the hasty footed time
For parting us- O, is all forgot
(Lines 236-240)
Hermia: I understand not what you mean by this
Helena: Ay, do! persever, counterfeit sad looks
Make mouths upon me when I turn my back,
Wink each other, hold the sweet jest up
This sport, well carried, shall be chronicled.

I understand that Helena was confused at Lysander and Demetrius change of heart, but so was Hermia. Hermia did not immediately accuse Helena of stealing her love. This goes to show that Hermia trusted Helena but Helena didn't. When Hermia eventually decides to fight, she does so for her love. When she got angry, it was justified by the actions of the order characters. All these goes to show how contradictory Hermia's character is to the story. I think the author made her character different from the rest to remind the reader that love can be patient, even when things go sour.
